Hello to Everyone,
It's been about 7 months since I last posted a newsletter. A lot has happened and also not so much. In Part 1 of my July newsletter I discussed how I was no longer interested in marketing my art and instead was focusing on becoming the best possible artist I can be.
In the ensuing months I have fully retired from house painting and have been spending time figuring out what that means. Mostly I've been figuring out my finances and been working on my life and apartment so that I can focus on my art. Gustave Flaubert the novelist once said "Be regular and orderly in your life so that you may be violent and original in your work." As my daughters can tell you I have been telling them for years that I need to get my life together. I'm finally doing it and should be back full time at making art in another month or so. Hopefully some of out will be violent and original.
In the meantime, I have managed to do a few new paintings. I am still focusing primarily on my head studies. I have taken to calling them Facescapes to emphasis my interest in the planes and terrain of the head. I am lighting them dramatically from below to disrupt what I've learned when I trained to be an illustrator. As an illustrator there are rules on proportion and spacing that I wanted to get beyond.
I'm featuring two of my new paintings here. Yellow Glasses and Floral Bouquet. In both of them I am moving to a new style. I do a drawing in black sharpie on paper and paint in oils allowing some of the sharpie to show through.
As always I am very interested in what you think positive our negative.
